There are many similarities between the skin conditions called psoriasis and roseacea. Besides being physically annoying, these both of these chronic skin disorders cause embarrassment or depression for their sufferers. Some even go as far as avoiding social contact altogether. The skin condition known as rosacea is a commonplace but little-known disorder of the facial skin. This skin condition inflicts slightly more than fourteen million American citizens every year. Recent research has discovered that most rosacea sufferers don't know much if anything about rosacea or that this is the skin affliction that they suffer from. Psoriasis can be genetic based, but, like roseacea, environmental triggers exacerbate symptoms. Injury, respiratory infections, some medicines, alcohol, and physical and emotional stress all have been attributed to causing flare-ups. Symptoms with this condition generally improve in the summer and worsen in the winter. That's where the similarities end. Psoriasis can affect any part of the body, while roseacea is primarily facial. Less than 2% of the population is afflicted with psoriasis, with over 10% dealing with roseacea. The truth is the relative frequency of rosacea has been growing by leaps and bounds as the baby boomer generation arrives at the most susceptible ages, 30-50 years of age. And furthermore, a new Gallup poll showed that 78 percent of Americans have no knowledge of this skin problem. The Gallup findings also divulged that the participants did not know how to recognize it and how to go about treating it. Nonetheless, the conditions acne-like effects, including a rosey red blush-looking cast to the face, can lead to serious occupational, social, and psychological problems for those people inflicted by rosacea, especially if left without treatment. Detailed surveys performed by the National Rosacea Society have found that nearly three quarters of rosacea sufferers claimed that this skin disorder had reduced their self-esteem and self-confidence. Unfortunately, the cause of rosacea is unknown. While no cure has been found, rosacea treatments are available that can provide assistance in controlling the signs and symptoms of this socially disruptive skin problem.
