Is It Rosacia, Roscea or Rosacea?
Thursday, June 4th, 2009 by adminNot surprisingly, the skin affliction called “rosacea” is is at the top of the list for incorrectly spelled skin afflictions in the field of medicine. It is incorrectly called rosacae, roseca, roseaca, rosacia and a host of other names, but the correct spelling of this socially disruptive skin disorder is r-o-s-a-c-e-a.
You will also hear this skin affliction called acne rosacea because its symptoms (i.e. pimples, pustules, whiteheads) closely resembling the widespread skin affliction called Acne Vulgaris, which translated is ‘common acne.’ However rosacia is something totally different . This skin disorder primarily attacks the facial skin and is characterized by times of skin aggravation followed by a period of remission. A primary difference from acne is that rosacea generally begins after the age of 30 and can be “caught” by men and women well into their late 40’s.
Most Popular Misspellings of The Term Rosacea
Our studies have shown that an amazing 10% of the searches performed on leading search engines by men and women searching for more information about Rosacea are misspelled versions of the exact medical name. Compiling a list of the highest incident mis-spellings, the search engines have reported the following terms being entered: rosacia, rosecea, roseacea, roscea, roseaca.
These inaccurate spellings are not the exception. In fact, they are entered into the largest search engine between 325 times for the highest incident of mis-spelled terms (rosacia) down to 33 times for the lowest (rosacae) on an average day. Even as you might expect that the big search engines don’t encourage misspellings, you will find a number of pages utilizing these misspelled terms to try to support the men and women with rosacea who just can’t get the spelling quite right.
Dealing With Rosacea
Despite how you spell out “Rosacea”, the list of symptoms are not consistent from person to person. Even though each man or woman suffering with this skin disease can have slightly different symptoms and various degrees of severity, the disease can quite often be diagnosed easily by an experienced dermatologist. The leading symptoms can be identified as a reddening of the cheeks, chin, nose or forehead. The good news is that the symptoms are transient and periods of remission generally follow exacerbations .
The truth is that there is no known solution for this skin disease. However, with appropriate treatment and changes to certain habits, this disease can effectively be controlled. So, whether we spell it rosacia, roscea, or roseca, the symptoms and social effects will be the same.

What Is The Difference Between Adult Acne and Acne Rosacea?
Thursday, June 4th, 2009 by adminIf you thought pimples were only for kids, get ready for a surprise! Many adults suffer from acne in their late twenties and thirties, even for people who had never experienced the symptoms of acne in their teenage years.
When considering adult acne, there are 2 types - the most widespread form called Acne Vulgaris, and the less known form known as Acne Rosacea.
Studies have shown that almost 80% of the US people with ages between 12 years old and 24 years old have suffered from some form of Acne Vulgaris. Surprisingly, a paltry 5% of these people, or 13 million people, experience the aggravation and “rosy” facial skin of Acne Rosacea.
What Is Acne Rosacea?
Acne Rosacea is a skin disease that is usually associated with the cheeks, chin, nose and less often, the eyes. It most commonly inflicts damage to men and women between 30 and 60. The disorder is characterized by redness and flushing of the cheeks and chin, pimples and a pattern of broken blood vessels .
At first, an individual’s cheeks will show a blush or flush appearance very easily. However, as the acne rosacea becomes more developed, redness will become much more visible around the area of the nose, and then expand to include a greater area of the face. In the more serious cases of this skin condition might experience enlarged oil glands under the surface of the skin on the nose that can develop into an enlarged and bulbous red nose. Taking a look at pictures of rosacea can offer a good visual image of the symptoms of this skin condition.
What Is The Best Treatment For Rosacea?
The good news is that the skin disease called Acne Rosacea isn’t medically dangerous. The downside is that this condition is also incurable. However, with a preventive program using a natural treatment for rosacea and lifestyle modifications, it can be controlled. A person is wise to treat rosacea with an effective rosacea cream to limit the sensitivity of the skin and minimize symptoms.

Rosacea Flare-Ups Happen More Frequently Than You Think
Saturday, March 28th, 2009 by adminIf you know anything about rosacea, you are aware that this skin condition is typified by flare-ups and remissions. This fact has been confirmed by recent studies conducted by the National Rosacea Society of over 950 rosacea sufferers.
The interesting fact coming out of this study was that over 55% of the survey takers stated that they experienced a flare-up or increased symptoms at least once a month. Of this group, 24% claimed that they were having flare-ups every few days; 15% once per week; and the remainder were once a month.
Another 25% of survey participants revealed that their flare-ups occurred only every few months.
How Long Do Flare-Ups Last?
This is the real question that most rosacea patients should be concerned with. If you only incur one outbreak per month but it lasts for several weeks, you are far worse off than an individual who experiences a weekly flare-up for less than a day. The statistics from the study were very revealing in this area. The breakout is as follows:
33% - More than a day
21% - Less than a day
21% - More than a week
14% - Several weeks to over a month
11% - Other
How Intense Are The Rosacea Flare-Ups?
The intensity of a sufferer’s flare-up is another key point that must be considered when evaluating the type of treatment that is appropriate for you. This study showed that over 50% classified their rosacea flare-ups as being moderate in intensity, while 12% believed them severe. A total of 32% felt that their outbreaks were in the mild range.
So, how did the respondents control their rosacea symptoms? 83% stated that rosacea treatments combined with avoiding their rosacea triggers effectively controlled their symptoms. Seeing that there is no cure for this skin disorder, it would certainly appear that a proactive approach to controlling symptoms is your best method to address your rosacea flare-ups.

Finding the Cause of Rosacea is Closer Than You Think
Friday, November 21st, 2008 by adminBased on a recent study, sponsored by the National Rosacea Society, delving into the cause of rosacea, it was found that the incidence of rosacea is very likely higher than what was previously thought. A study conducted at the Harvard Medical School of 2,933 women from ages between 10 and 70 disclosed an incidence rate for rosacea of 16% in Caucasian women.
It had been thought that the prevalence rate for the same group stood at 14% for women and 6% for men, based on studies conducted in 1989. As a percent of the total population (including Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians and Indians), the overall incidence of rosacea was estimated at 10%.
Subtype 1 vs. Subtype 2 Rosacea
Additional findings found that it was the subtype 1 form of rosacea (facial redness) that was the most prevalent. This form of the skin disorder was identified in 14.8% of the Caucasian women in the above referenced study. This compares to a 1.5% rate of subtype 2 rosacea (characterized by pimples and bumps). The study subjects were women from across the globe, ranging from Los Angeles to Akita Japan.
Who Is Most Affected by Rosacea?
The skin condition of rosacea was found to be much more prevalent in the English subjects with 20% showing symptoms of rosacea. But it was the American group that had the highest incidence of subtype 2 rosacea.
Will This Rosacea Study Make a Difference?
From these studies it was fairly clear that rosacea is actually affecting more people than originally thought, or the incidence of this skin disorder is on the rise. It affects fair complexion individuals more than the darker skinned groups and subtype 1 rosacea (flushing) is the predominant symptom amongst those studied. Because of these new findings, researchers are looking in new directions in their search for the cause of rosacea.
Hopefully, each new finding will add another piece of the puzzle in finding a cure for this aggravating skin condition. In the meantime, symptoms should be managed through lifestyle changes with the help of effective rosacea treatments and medications.

Can Rosacea Patients Also Suffer From Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Friday, November 21st, 2008 by adminIf you are rosacea sufferer who also suffers from the skin disorder called Seborrheic Dermatitis, you have plenty of company. It is not uncommon for people with rosacea to have facial skin with the propensity to contract other skin diseases or disorders.
Seborrheic dermatitis is considered a chronic and recurring inflammatory skin condition that is characterized by a red, scaly or itchy rash. These symptoms are often found in the creases around the nose, the inner eyebrows or as dandruff on the scalp. According to a study conducted by a noted dermatologist, rosacea is the most common facial skin disorder that overlaps with seborrheic dermatitis. In fact, it was found that 26 percent of rosacea patients had facial Seborrheic Dermatitis and 28 percent had the disorder on the scalp.
So, if you have noted what appears to be a different type of rash on your face(rather than a typical rosacea symptom), consider that the skin irritation could be Seborrheic Dermatitis. If you suspect that this may be the issue, a visit to your dermatologist is definitely in order.

Acne Rosacea Researchers Identify the Odds of Getting This Skin Disorder
Friday, November 21st, 2008 by adminBased on findings by acne rosacea researchers, people who tend to suffer from the effects of acne rosacea generally fall into the age group of 30 and over. Beyond this fact, acne rosacea can affect almost anybody. This skin disorder cuts across all demographics regardless of race, gender, socio-economic level, and region. However, there are certain groups who tend to be more vulnerable to developing rosacea.
These groups have been identified as:
- Individuals over the age of 30.
- People with fairer skin who have a tendency to blush or flush more easily. This group is thought to be at higher risk of contracting this skin disorder than normal to dark skinned individuals.
- Women tend to be diagnosed with rosacea more often than men.
- Males tend to incur more severe symptoms than females. (A theory holds that this may be the case because men tend to delay medical assistance until the symptoms reach the advanced stages).
As you may know, acne rosacea researchers have been working diligently on a cure for acne rosacea for decades. Unfortunately, no cure has been found to-date. However, the latest treatment for acne rosacea continues to improve upon the older cures allowing for flare-ups to be controlled more effectively.
The rosacea skin treatments available today take full advantage of technological advances in botanical research and the use of natural ingredients. The acne rosacea researchers have found that using all natural ingredients reduces the likelihood of skin irritation (in already sensitive skin) that can be aggravated by the stronger chemically-derived pharmaceuticals.
