Does Rosacea Disappear After Menopause?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009 by admin

The fact of the matter is that as women experience hot flashes during menopause, they often trigger flare-ups in their rosacea.  However, these triggers aren’t necessarily the underlying cause of this skin disorder. But once the hot flashes diminish or subside altogether, the rosacea symptoms may still continue and result in an exacerbation of your particular physical reactions to the skin disease.

As you may already know, rosacea is a long-term skin disorder where there is no cure at this time.  However, it can be effectively controlled through the use of medical treatments and avoidance of environmental and lifestyle factors.

If you find that your hot flashes are a particularly difficult rosacea trigger, the management of this disorder may be more predictable once they stop.  This is contingent, however, upon maintaining your rosacea therapy and monitoring of your triggers.

Rosacea Symptoms: Summer Is A Time For Caution

Friday, June 5th, 2009 by admin

With summer almost upon us, most individuals are thinking about summer activities and fun in the sun.  But recent surveys by the National Rosacea Society indicate that many rosacea sufferers believe the summer season is one to be wary of.   With almost 85% of respondents stating that their rosacea symptoms are affected by the changing of the seasons, it is a time of caution and awareness for those diagnosed with rosacea.

Surprisingly, about 50% of those taking the survey thought that there symptoms were at their worst during the summer months.  An almost equal amount said that they make more lifestyle changes to control flare-ups in the summer than any other time of the year.

The problem being that sun exposure and summer heat are two of the most common rosacea triggers.  So, rosacea patients need to be aware of this high risk time of the year and avoid too much outdoor time and should use sunscreen products.  But don’t be fooled by a cloudy summer day - the heat and humidity can still lead to exacerbations in this skin condition.

What seemed to be a common factor in this survey was that many individuals were adversely affected by cold weather as well.  The study showed that 36% of respondents and 46% of those living in the northern states found their rosacea symptoms were at their worst during the winter months.  The wind and biting cold can be especially hard on already sensitive skin.

It would appear that the two most extreme seasons wreak the most havoc on many individual’s rosacea symptoms.  The good news was that almost 87% claimed that a combination of skin treatments and lifestyle changes helped reduce flare-ups and their overall symptoms.

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008 by admin

As you are probably aware, your best chance of keeping your rosacea in remission is to identify and avoid the activities and environments that exacerbate your skin condition.  We also realize that you may be thinking, “Easier said than done!” So, if you are having trouble identifying all of your rosacea triggers, we have found a resource that may help you organize and track various environmental and lifestyle factors leading to a rosacea flare-up.

The National Rosacea Society offers a free Rosacea Diary booklet that will help you track your flare-ups and the factors leading to the exacerbation.  This handy diary will make your mission of identifying your specific rosacea triggers much easier and provide a record of your activities and environmental factors just prior to and after each flare-up. Over a period of a month or two, you should start to see a pattern forming that will identify your triggers.

We have also detailed a list of common rosacea triggers to help get you started in your “detective” work and also have an ongoing Rosacea Survey for our site visitors to cast their votes as to the most significant rosacea trigger that they personally experience.  If you would like to see what triggers are most common, why not visit both website pages and see if the lists don’t give you a starting point for your task at hand.

Now you need to understand that rosacea triggers can vary from person to person, so there really is no set pattern or combination of factors affecting every rosacea sufferer.  Your triggers may be unique, but with the help of the Rosacea Diary, identifying your rosacea triggers will be a much easier task and your efforts will prove much more productive.

Take Our Acne Rosacea Triggers Survey

Friday, November 21st, 2008 by admin

If you are wondering what factors ‘trigger’ your acne rosacea flare-ups, why not take our short survey (30 seconds) to see where you stand compared to other rosacea sufferers.  Our own visitor survey will help you get a perspective on what are the most common acne rosacea triggers.   The results of this ongoing survey can help you and others to identify their own personal acne rosacea trigger factors and determine what exacerbates your rosacea symptoms.

To take our survey, go to the Rosacea Trigger Survey page and select the ONE trigger factor that is the primary cause of your rosacea flare-ups.  Even though you may have multiple factors affecting your acne rosacea, we are only looking for that one factor that affects your condition most seriously.  Just check the button next to that trigger factor and press the “Submit” button.

You will then receive immediate feedback on how common your trigger is relative to other participants in the survey.  The more visitors who take our survey, the better statistically will be the results.  If you are not sure what is triggering your flare-ups, you should read our Rosacea Triggers article to get you started on the process for identifying your own triggers.  You can also take into consideration those factors identified by the National Rosacea Society as the most common acne rosacea triggers.

Why not take less than a minute and give us your feedback now?

Note:  We have re-set the survey due to a technical issue, however, the three leading rosacea triggers were: Stress by a wide margin, followed by Sun and Alcohol.

Identify Your Rosacea Triggers With This Helpful Tool

Friday, November 21st, 2008 by admin

If you are like many rosacea sufferers, identifying your rosacea triggers may seem like unraveling a murder mystery.  Possible catalysts for rosacea flare-ups can be very elusive and hard to pinpoint without a plan and the proper tools.

As you have probably read, there are a large number of lifestyle and environmental factors that may be responsible for triggering your flare-ups.  One issue in identifying your rosacea triggers is that no individual will be affected by all of the potential triggers, but only be a few factors.

How to Identify a Rosacea Trigger

In an attempt to de-mystify the process for identifying your triggers, there is a logical and methodical process that must be followed.  The key to finding out what triggers your rosacea flare-ups is to track your skin condition over a period of weeks.

This tracking process can be simplified by using a log which details the events and environment just prior to a flare-up and what action appears to relieve your symptoms.   This is very important because you will begin to see a pattern over time that will make your rosacea triggers much more obvious to you.

Keep Track of Your Rosacea Flare-ups

The National Rosacea Society offers a diary checklist that assists in your documenting any exposure to various common rosacea triggers on a daily basis.  These common triggers can range from weather to emotions (i.e. stress), activities (i.e. workouts) and various foods (i.e. spicy).  We highly recommend that you use this rosacea diary checklist and, best of all, it is free.  You can get your diary at www.rosacea.org

Avoiding Your Rosacea Triggers Is Key

Once you have identified your personal triggers, it is up to you to avoid the specific environmental factor or food that will result in a flare-up in your symptoms.  There will be situations when you cannot totally avoid one of these factors, but small adjustments can make a significant difference.

If hot air is one of your triggers and you find yourself at a restaurant where the heat vent is blowing directly on you, ask for another table or change seats with your partner.   It becomes very important to be fully aware of your environment and how it may affect you (if environmental factors are your triggers).

We hope that this advice will help you to identify your rosacea triggers and help you to control rosacea flare-ups in the future.  Be methodical and persistent in your record keeping and you will enjoy the benefits of fewer flare-ups and a more normal lifestyle.
