If you are already a sufferer, you know that careful rosacea skin care can be a worthwhile endeavor. Special precautions in caring for your sensitive skin is almost a must to avoid exacerbations and flareups.

Here are some simple, yet effective, guidelines for caring for your skin and make living with this skin condition just a little easier:

Give Your Face a “Short” Break — After gently cleaning and blotting your face dry with a soft towel, give your skin a few minutes to return to its normal condition before applying any topical medications.  In turn, allow the medicine or creme to dry for 5-10 minutes before attempting to apply any foundation or make-up.

Be Gentle to Your Skin — Be sure to avoid any of the following aggravating cleansing practices:
+ rough or scratchy washcloths,
+ loofahs,
+ wash brushes,
+ sponges, and
+ hot water baths or showers.

Try Not to Irritate Your Eyelids — If you are suffering from ocular rosacea, be extremely careful when cleaning or applying medicated ointments or cremes on your eyelids. Follow your physicians’ instructions for eyelid scrubbing or applying rosacea medications.

Don’t Use a Traditional Razor — a dull razor blade can almost certainly cause irritation on your sensitive facial skin. Try using a quality electric razor for a smooth and close shave without the risk of inflaming your rosacea.  Also, try to avoid using shaving lotions that contain high levels of alcohol - they will burn or sting your newly shaven skin.

Be Very Selective When Using Cosmetics — When choosing cosmetics, your best bet is to stick with high quality products from a better known manufacturer. They tend to contain more natural ingredients and prove to be less irritating. The use of mineral makeup (Sheer Cover has an excellent product) is also highly recommended and rarely irritates rosacea inflicted facial skin.

These are a few tips to integrate into your rosacea skin care program, but remember, common sense also plays a big part in protecting your sensitive skin. If you think a product might irritate or inflame your skin, check the ingredients and proceed cautiously be trying the product on an inconspicuous “test” patch of skin.

Using an Acne Rosacea Daily Cleanser

As part of your skin care program, using an acne rosacea daily cleanser can be an effective step in controlling flare-ups. Because rosacea is often aggravated by the mis-use or over-use of cosmetics containing skin irritating ingredients, a daily cleanser designed specifically for sensitive skin should be used exclusively.

Your Rosacea Skin Care Program

Ensuring that your skin care routine is compatible with your rosacea should be the first step in developing a new rosacea skin regimen. Use of makeups, cleansers, or moisturizers that irritate your already sensitive skin should be halted immediately. It takes a gentle skin care routine to aid in the control of your rosacea.

When cleaning your face, use a mild and non-abrasive cleanser, then rinse your face with warm water. Very importantly, gently blot your face dry with a soft cotton towel. Do NOT use a rough wash cloth for cleaning your face. This will only irritate the skin further.
